Highly accurate laboratory testing
Professional laboratories generally use "sensitivity" and "specificity" when assessing the accuracy of a test.
  • Sensitivity (also known as true positive rate) refers to the proportion of samples that are actually positive, for example, the proportion of people who are truly sick.
  • Specificity (also called true negative rate) refers to the proportion of samples that are actually negative, for example, the proportion of people who are not really sick and who are judged to be not sick by the hospital.

Medical diagnostic test

In many tests, sensitivity refers to the degree to which true positives are not overlooked (so there are few false negatives), and specificity is the degree to which true negatives are indeed identified (so there are few false positives). Therefore, a high-sensitivity test seldom ignores true positives; while a high-specificity test seldom identifies other things that are not the target of the test as positive. A high-sensitivity and high-specificity check indicates that it has done excellent in both areas, so this check "rarely ignores the target it is looking for and rarely misjudges other things as the target."
