Transmission of Trichomoniasis

Transmission of Trichomoniasis

The parasite Trichomonas vaginalis is transmitted from an infected individual to others during unprotected sex. The parasite mostly infects the penis and the urethra in men, and the vagina and urethra in women. Other parts of the body such as the mouth or anus are rarely affected but possible. Women infected with trichomoniasis during pregnancy can lead to preterm delivery and low birth weight of the newborn.

Prevention

Trichomoniasis can be prevented by using condoms correctly and consistently during vaginal, anal and oral sex.
