Transmission of Bacterial Vaginosis
The exact mechanism of how BV-causing bacteria are transmitted is not well established. However, research shows that transmission is strongly associated with sexual activities, supported by an increased risk of BV with
- higher number of sexual partner,
- not using a condom.
BV re-infection in women who had unprotected sex with the same male partner after successful treatment suggests men can be a potential source of infection to their female partners through vaginal sex.
Prevention of Bacterial Vaginosis
BV can be prevented by using condoms correctly and consistently during sexual activities. A new condom should be used when sex toys are used or shared between female partners.
